Assam can save Rs. 273 crore in a year through electricity saving

Guwahati, 14th November 2006

We can save Ninety Crore twenty five lacs megawatt electricity if we put off 100 watt bulb for ten hours in a day when we do not want to use that electricity unnecessarily. If we convert it in terms of rupees it will come to 273 Crore Rupees per year. This startling revelation was stated by Shri D. K. Shrma Assistant General Manager, Power Grid, Shillong, during a press meet in Srimanta Sankerdeva Kolashetra, Guwahati today.

These all figures are only pertaining to Assam and through this Save Energy Campaign we can bridge the gap between power generation and power demand to a great extent, he added.

For Assam, Power Grid Corporation has been entrusted upon to do Campaign for energy saving through painting competitions amongst the Children. Nation wide Painting Competition on Energy Saving for students of 4th and 5th standards was organized by Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India in association with concerned state Governments on Childrens Day, 14th November 2006.The competition was held at Srimanta Sankardev Kolakshetra, Panjabari, Guwahati and prize giving ceremony was held at Aarohan, Auditorium of Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia Children Welfare Trust at 3 P.M. on the same day.

This year the school level participants in this competition are 23320 from 583 schools from all over Assam against about 4000 in the last year. The prizes to the best fifty school level participants, who are already selected for the State Level Painting Competition and 8 winners of State Level Competition will given on the same day.

This awareness programme of energy saving, through painting competition, amongst the tiny tots is aimed to increase their creativity and help save energy. The main objective to take childrens in this campaign was to inculcate saving habit from the beginning because they would become potential user and buyer in the future.

As an earnest effort to stop misuse of electricity, Ministry of Power has launched a National Awareness Campaign in order to promote energy conservation in the country from 2005. Painting Competition for the students at School, State and National level has been included as one of the activities of the campaign, which would not only make children aware about the need of conserving energy but also to offer them a chance to explore their creativity.

The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship, Ministry of Small Scale Industries, Government of India will organize two free Faculty Development Programmes on Entrepreneurship for the University, Colleges, Technical Institutes and School teachers up to higher secondary level preferably of science stream at the institute premises in Guwahati. The programme will commence from January 1 to 12 and February 20 to March 3, 2007. The programme is being sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.

The programme is aimed at to creating awareness of the need and importance of entrepreneurship education in economy and imparting knowledge and skill in diverse training methods to the students and teachers, developing skills in guiding and counseling students and planning a curriculum and developing teachers with an entrepreneurial mindset.

Interested candidates may apply through competent authority to the Programme Director Shri Pronab Sarma at least 10 days before the commencement of the programme. Institutional sponsorship is essential for the programme.
